Google Optimize Troubleshooting

Are you experiencing issues with your Google Optimize?

In this guide, we’ll help you troubleshoot your Google Optimize settings with ExactMetrics and fix common errors or misconfigurations.

The most common misconfigurations with Google Optimize:

  1. The Google Optimize snippet for the container with ID GTM-*******/OPT-******* is not correctly installed on this page.
  2. Uncaught ReferenceError: ga is not defined.
  3. A gray or white screen for several seconds before the page loads.

Simply log out of your WordPress site. ExactMetrics doesn’t track logged-in admins and editors by default. More details can be found here: Error from the Google Optimize Chrome Plugin when Previewing the Variant.

Uncaught ReferenceError: ga is not defined:

Turn on Compatibility Mode in ExactMetrics.

Compatibility mode allows ExactMetrics to work with other plugins. For more information about this, check out this guide: Here’s how to enable compatibility mode in ExactMetrics.

A gray or white screen for several seconds before the page loads:

Are you seeing a grey screen before your page fully loads?

This probably means you haven’t published your Google Optimize container. When you don’t have a published container, the page appears blank for a few seconds because ExactMetrics expects the Google Optimize container to load. Since there’s nothing published, nothing loads.
