Talk to your Google Analytics data using AI Chat, an analytics assistant built into ExactMetrics.
Get plain-English answers about your site’s traffic, top-performing pages, where visitors come from, and overall performance, drawn from your connected Google Analytics property.
This guide walks through how to start using AI Chat.
Prerequisites:
- ExactMetrics is installed on your site.
- You are connected to your Google Analytics account.
Finding AI Chat
You’ll find AI Chat in the bottom-right corner of any ExactMetrics Reports page. Click the chat icon to open the chat panel.
Note: AI Chat only shows on report pages. You won’t see it on ExactMetrics » Settings or anywhere else in your WordPress admin.
Starting a Conversation
When AI Chat opens for the first time, you’ll see a welcome screen with several suggested prompts to help you get going.
Click any suggested prompt to send it right away, or type your own question in the Ask Chat AI field at the bottom and press Enter.
Pro Tip: Stuck on what to ask? Try a suggested prompt first. Every AI Chat response also offers Quick Key Insights, clickable follow-up questions for digging into related topics.
What You Can Ask AI Chat
AI Chat handles a wide range of analytics questions. A few examples:
- Traffic: “How’s my traffic this month?” or “How many visitors did I get this week?”
- Top pages: “What are my best landing pages?” or “Which pages get the most views?”
- Traffic sources: “Where are my visitors coming from?” or “What are my top referrers?”
- Comparisons: “How does this month compare to last month?” or “Is traffic up or down?”
- Devices and geography: “What devices are people using?” or “What countries are visitors from?”
- Bounce rate, conversions, and other metrics: “What is my bounce rate?” or “What’s my conversion rate?”
With the eCommerce, Forms, or Media addons active, you can also ask about those areas:
- “What are my top products?”
- “How are my form conversions?”
- “How is my video performance?”
Tips for Better Answers
Want more targeted answers from AI Chat? Try these:
- Specify a timeframe. Phrases like “in the last week”, “this month”, “yesterday”, or a specific date range will scope the answer to that window.
- Name a specific metric for a quick answer. Asking “what’s my bounce rate?” or “how many sessions?” returns a focused reply. A broader question like “how’s my traffic?” produces a fuller breakdown with tables, observations, and recommendations.
- Mention the area you’re interested in. Phrases like “traffic sources”, “landing pages”, “device”, “country”, or “conversions” help AI Chat zero in on the relevant part of your data.
What to Expect From a Response
AI Chat usually answers in a few seconds for simple questions. Richer questions such as month-over-month comparisons or full traffic breakdowns, can take around 15 seconds. While AI Chat is working, you’ll see a rotating message letting you know your answer is on its way.
Responses come back as a mix of plain-language explanation, structured tables of your data, and for some questions, extended observations and recommendations. Many responses also include Quick Key Insights: clickable follow-up prompts that take you a step further.
AI Chat Usage Credits
AI Chat usage is metered in credits. Each ExactMetrics license tier comes with its own credit allowance:
- Lite: 500 credits
- Plus: 5,000 credits
- Pro: 10,000 credits
Your AI Chat credit allowance resets at the start of each calendar month.
Once you reach your credit limit, AI Chat will pause until more credits are available. You have two options to keep going: purchase additional credits directly, or upgrade to a higher plan.
You can check your current AI Chat usage on your ExactMetrics account page. Log in at exactmetrics.com/my-account, and on the Overview tab, look for the AI Credits Used indicator in your customer info card. Click Buy Credits to add more.
The Chat Header
The AI Chat header has four controls:
- Menu (☰): Opens a menu with New Chat, Pinned Conversations, and History.
- Pin / Unpin: Bookmarks the current conversation so you can find it later under Pinned Conversations. This option appears after AI Chat has answered your first question.
- Fullscreen: Expands the chat panel for easier reading. Click again to return to the standard size.
- Close (X): Closes the chat panel. Your conversation is saved.
Your Conversations Are Saved
AI Chat keeps your conversation as you move between ExactMetrics report pages. Closing and reopening the chat, switching between reports, or reloading the page all preserve the conversation, so it’ll be waiting when you return.
To start a fresh conversation, click the menu icon and choose New Chat. The previous conversation isn’t lost. It moves to History, where you can reopen it any time.
Open the menu and click History to see all your past conversations, labelled by your first question. Click any to reopen.
Use the three-dot icon next to a conversation to:
- Pin it (it’ll also appear under Pinned Conversations).
- Delete it from your history.
Sharing Feedback
Each AI Chat response has four small icons beneath it:
- Thumbs up: Marks this response as helpful.
- Thumbs down: Marks this response as not helpful. You can optionally share a note about what went wrong.
- Copy: Copies the response text to your clipboard.
- Regenerate: Asks AI Chat to try the question again.
Your feedback helps us improve the answers AI Chat gives. Thanks for sharing!
What AI Chat Can’t Help With
AI Chat is focused on your Google Analytics data. For other topics, it’ll let you know it’s not the right tool.
- Installing or setting up ExactMetrics: See our getting started documentation or contact support.
- Anything outside your analytics data: AI Chat will politely let you know it’s an analytics assistant and suggest a topic it can help with.
Troubleshooting
If AI Chat isn’t responding or says it doesn’t have data to share, the most common cause is a Google Analytics connection issue. To check:
- Go to ExactMetrics » Settings » General.
- Confirm your Google Analytics property is showing as connected. If not, click Connect ExactMetrics to reconnect.
- If you have a paid ExactMetrics license, verify it shows as Active on the same page. Click Verify Key if needed.
- Refresh the page and try AI Chat again.
If your connection looks good and AI Chat still isn’t working, please reach out to our support team. We’re happy to help.
That’s all! You’re set up to chat with your analytics through AI Chat.
