How to use Advanced Tracking Settings

If you’re currently utilizing Google Tag Manager (GTM) for Google Analytics tracking, and you are considering using ExactMetrics for improved reporting, you’re making a wise decision!

This guide will walk you through the process of setting up the Advanced Tracking Settings in ExactMetrics, to prevent duplicate tracking while maintaining your existing GTM setup.

Important: Activating the Advanced Tracking Settings feature will turn off ExactMetrics tracking. Skip this guide if you rely on ExactMetrics for monitoring your site activity.

Prerequisites:

  1. You’re an ExactMetrics Plus user or higher.
  2. ExactMetrics is installed and activated.
  3. You’ve already connected ExactMetrics to your Google Analytics property.
  4. You already have an active GTM container implemented on your website.

Getting Started

Start by visiting tagmanager.google.com and finding the Container ID of your GTM container currently in use.

If necessary, you can also locate your Google Analytics Measurement Protocol API secret value for your custom tracking setup at analytics.google.com » Admin » Data streams.

These values are needed when setting up the ExactMetrics Advanced Tracking Settings.

Now that you have these details ready, you can log into your WordPress dashboard and click into ExactMetrics » Settings.

Scroll down and open the Advanced Tracking Settings section. Input the values to enable the setting.

Warning: Adding a GTM container ID into the Custom Google Tag ID field will deactivate ExactMetrics tracking for your site.

This includes features such as ExactMetrics Forms tracking, eCommerce tracking, and custom event tracking (download click tracking, affiliate link tracking and etc) among others.

If you wish to continue using ExactMetrics tracking, do not activate the Advanced Tracking Settings.

Make sure to update your settings or click Save Changes to set the setting as Active.

When the Advanced Tracking Setting is Active, it means no ExactMetrics tracking code will be inserted into your site, thereby allowing your current GTM setup to operate without encountering duplicate Google Analytics tracking issues.

You can verify this by accessing your homepage and inspecting the source code of your website for the following:

<!-- No tracking code set -->

That’s all! Now you’ve learned how to prevent ExactMetrics tracking from being inserted into your site via the Advanced Tracking Settings.
